Review Newman
Oh my goodness, let me tell you about Newman! This book absolutely blew me away. I went in expecting a dark urban fantasy, based on the description, and that's certainly what I got – but with so much more! The premise alone is captivating: this unnerving figure, Newman, who freezes time and compels you to do his bidding… chills just thinking about it! The author, Mykhailo Vdovchenko, does an incredible job of building suspense. That opening scene you describe? It perfectly sets the tone, leaving you breathless and eager to find out more.
The pacing is fantastic; it's a real page-turner. I found myself completely absorbed in the story, desperate to know what would happen next. And the twists! Oh, the twists! I genuinely didn't see many of them coming, which is a rare and wonderful thing in a genre that can sometimes feel predictable. It's a fast-paced thrill ride, but it's also surprisingly witty. There's a sharp, sarcastic edge to the narrative that kept me engaged even during the more intense moments. It's that perfect blend of dark fantasy and humor that prevents it from ever feeling too heavy.
I especially loved the character of Ann. At first glance, she seems quite straightforward, but Vdovchenko expertly unveils her complexity throughout the story. Her growth and development are truly compelling to witness. The author does a fantastic job of crafting morally gray characters; you find yourself questioning their actions and motivations, which adds a whole other layer to the narrative. And speaking of complex, the world-building is phenomenal. Immortality, occult practices, clashing gods, other dimensions… it’s a richly detailed and thoroughly immersive universe that feels both familiar and utterly unique. The apocalyptic undertones add a sense of urgency, keeping the stakes consistently high.
However, I'll admit, I finished the book with a few questions buzzing in my head. Like many other readers, I'm still trying to wrap my head around what exactly "Nawor" is! That's definitely something that's left me wanting more and eagerly awaiting any future installments (or a Netflix adaptation, please!). It's a testament to Vdovchenko's writing that even after finishing the book, I'm still thinking about it, analyzing the details, and trying to piece together all the clues.
If you enjoy urban fantasy with a dash of cosmic horror, a hefty dose of sarcasm, and characters you won't easily forget, then Newman is a must-read. This is truly a debut novel to remember, and I, for one, am incredibly excited to see what Vdovchenko writes next. It's a book I'd happily recommend to anyone who likes their fantasy with a good helping of edge and a whole lot of mystery. Highly, highly recommended!
